Dan Black: Big in 2009

I’m
actually quite disappointed with myself that I am fit to write a post on New Years Day, I should be holed up in bed with a cup of tea, toast, marmite and a fuck off headache. Luckily for you, I had the biggest anti-hangover breakfast when I got in this morning (shit loads of salami, ham, cheese, two fried eggs, two packs of doritos, a brie roll, chocolate nesquik and a pint of water) so I am well enough to post about Dan Black, ex member of under-rated band “The Servants” who is currently living in Paris, having just signed a deal with a major label thanks to the furore surrounding his current demos.
He turned a lot of heads with his remake of Notorious BIG’s “Hypnotize” that centres their lyrics around the drums from Rihanna’s “Umbrella” and an incredible orchestral arrangement that will have everybody who listens to Radio 1 feeling like a melancholy, under-nourished indie musician by the end of 2009. I love it just for this lyric:

Gonna blast squeeze first ask questions last
That’s how most of these so-called gangsters pass”

Luckily, he backs up this remake with some material of his own, that cements in my mind why Dan Black is going to be charting in 2009. “Yours” is unbelievably simple, but its pounding beat laments brilliantly against modern day life. Finally, a star (in the making) who we can all relate to.

“I don’t wanna be yours no more,
not yours no more,
don’t wanna be like this where I just exist,
can i have a little bit more? “

There you go then, Dan Black; 2009′s Jamie T.
