MSTRKRFT "Fist Of God" Leaks
Blurgh! I am well aware that I make far too much of album covers, but MSTRKRFT’s abhorrent cover to newly leaked album “Fist Of God” is symbolic of a downward spiral from universal acclaim to the low that is “Bounce”, a song that was only saved by the A-Trak remix and the incredible “Vuvuvu”. But… what is “Fist of God”? More of the same tired, generic “Bounce-isms” that just try far too hard, or uplifting hands-in-the-air moments like we saw on “Vuvuvu”?
Well, the answer is an underwhelming mix of both. I had hoped that MSTRKRFT were too creative to use the same distorted-riffy sound on every single song, but it seems I was, mostly, wrong. It almost feels like Al-P and Keeler needed some quick cash so knocked out a few identikit MSTRKRFT-esq songs.
Fortunately, “Fist of God” has its redeeming moments, and what is most annoying is that these moments are absolutely fantastic, showing what the album could have been with a little more thought and a little less riffage. As I mentioned before, “Vuvuvu” is, and always has been, an incredibly euphoric song, and it is perfectly complemented by the almost perfect “Heartbreaker” that sounds like a mix between the Metronomy song of the same name, and LCD Soundsystem. Indeed, “Heartbreaker” is one of the few moments that they tone it down, and it really works. Of course… being a MSTRKRFT fan, you have to have been hoping for a few of those fat distorted sounds, and they pull it off best with “Fist of God’s” muscular refrain, and “1,000 Cigarettes”. That’s enough though boys – they are great songs, but we don’t need another four or five slightly inferior versions of the same song, a fact that consigns “It Aint Love”, “So Deep”, “Click Click” and “Word Up” to failure before we’re even thirty seconds in.
I mentioned yesterday that the most exciting thing about Yuksek’s album was that he had defied the pitfall of many an electronic artist and created a diverse album. MSTRKRFT are almost the absolute antithesis of this, creating an album that is so richly MSTRKRFT-ish that it is somewhat sickly. However, they’ve always been best at one offs, and the songs that they get it right on are absolutely immense. In fact, if this had been a five song EP it could have got a perfect score. I’m just quite offended that they have filled my hard drive up with the inescapably superfluous filler that pervades the rest of the album.
MSTRKRFT – Vuvuvu (All songs removed as per request from Dim Mak)
MSTRKRFT – Heartbreaker
MSTRKRFT – Fist of God
All highly recommended, I wouldn’t bother with most of the rest of the album though.

Expect a nasty email from Dim Mak very soon.
Posting these in 320 is pretty shady bro

if every other blog was asked to take this down, why on earth would you post them up and in 320? you are fucking stupid

I disagree. Firstly, I think “It Ain’t Love” feat. Lil’ Mo and “Fist Of God” really stand out. They’re fantastic.
“Breakaway” and the non-rap version of “1000 Cigarettes” are very good, too. “Heartbreaker” feat. And the John Legend track grew on me, too. And Bounce is excellent, but I’ve heard it way too many times and it’s lost all novelty.

seriously.. retarded to post this stuff in 320.

the original bounce was the best version. heard to many times? sure, but isnt that what happens to good songs? heartbreaker is fucking incredible. revolutionary in this genre of dance music. melodic, sad, and beautiful.
posting that shit up in 320 is a clear statement regarding your lack of respect for the artist. at least wait til the album dropped.
and if you think the album sucks so much, why dont you make a better one? because you cant.

Sorry… but what difference would it make to post the songs when the album comes out next month? The people who downloaded those songs from here were never going to pay for the album anyway – and will have downloaded it for free either now, or when it becomes more available later. Secondly, it’s an absolute no brainer – of course Dim Mak were going to ask for them to be taken down, which I have no problem with, so I fail to see how it was “fucking stupid” to allow my audience to listen to music I was talking about. They were a lot more polite than most of you as well. If you have a problem with it, don’t download it. The worst thing is that I doubt most of you hypocrites will even pay for the album when it comes out.
On a different note… “Heartbreaker” is amazing!!

it has to do with respect..you say mp3s are for sampling purposes…what kind of sampling is 3 songs in 320-bit from an unreleased, unauthorized leak. You are just as guilty as the idiot who leaked it. What makes you more of an idiot is that you knew AHEAD of time that you were gonna get a removal email but you didnt care you just wanted some more hits to your website.
So what some ppl may not buy the record.
If your readers dont buy music what the fuck is the point of your blog!

I appreciate your view, but i don’t think that posting three songs (one that was released last year) for a few hours is really comparable to the guy who leaked it. What’s the point of the blog? Well that’s just a stupid argument… it’s hardly like I started this to combat internet piracy; as long as people enjoy the music, I’m not bothered. I’m sure that people who download music for free end up giving much more to artists through paying hundreds of dollars each year to go to overpriced shows and buy overpriced merchandise. If you have a problem with people not buying music and leaks on blogs then I just wouldn’t read them – it’s what they thrive on. Take a scroll down the popular page on hypem.com and you will see unreleased tracks from Tiga, Simian Mobile Disco, beirut, Royksopp… The list goes on and on, and my point is that it’s all down to personal choice. If you don’t like it, that’s fine. You may have noticed that I did not post the leak, or a link to it, by the way.

I bet EVERYONE who posted “fuck you” comments magically has this on their iTunes. :-/
To be honest I would’ve posted something too.. but felt the album was a self-indulgent repetitive waste of time. I nearly posted a “Best of the album new album” teaser which just a medley of the looks.
Wimped out.
