Unfinished Business

Sorry that I’ve been away for so long – ridiculously swamped with speeches, essays, research and desperately trying to understand chemistry, I should be able to keep up with things in a week or so. Just thought I would bring you up to speed on what’s been keeping me going recently!

Recently, actually, perhaps isn’t the most fitting word; I uploaded this song from Little Comets ages ago, after umpteen people told me that they were the ones to watch in 2009. Back in the day (sometime in January), “One Night In October” was the only song that I’d listen to. My addiction to it was, actually, pathological. Now… when my friends tell me that I like “indie” music, I go mad. I hate Pigeon Detectives, Holloways, Wombats, all those indenti-kit shite bands that pigeon-hole “indie”. This, is, undeniably, what you would call “indie” music. But, it’s got a bit of a conscience; a bit of The National to it. I just defy you not to enjoy this, their newest single that has, I am told by their “people”, been making a stir on Radio 1.

I’ve been enjoying a fair few albums recently; Mr Oizo, Antony & The Johnsons and Empire of the Sun, mainly, but one of the best that I have heard this year is White Lies’ debut. This feels sort of personal to me, because they were one of my first posts back in July-ish. I said at the time that their album “would probably be quite successful in the charts sometime in 2009″. Right now, White Lies are at #1 in the UK charts. Of course, this is because it was actually the only major release that week, but they have certainly destroyed everybody’s expectations.

By now, you must have heard some of it, but I feel the need to post it not only because I bothered to upload the song a while ago, but the reviews have been depressingly mixed. I don’t have time to do the review that I would love to write, but it’s a fantastic album. Yes, it has a certain major label polish to it that lead the most pretentious bloggers to believe that it is “inauthentic”, but anybody with a conscience can get past this “problem”. Of course, it’s edgy to go against the hype, but… just don’t. Enjoy it instead.
