Phoenix – 1901: Song of the Year

Woah. I think I may have even shocked myself with that one. Song of the year assertions already? That’s almost as stupid as calling Merriweather Post Pavilion album of the year… it will be though, won’t it? That’s just how French electro-rock band Phoenix’s preview single of their newest album makes you feel, though. The album, “Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix” is out is May, and the band are giving away this song for free in precedence of the release.

OK, so I know that every other blog has posted this song already, but I had to post it. Why? Well… there are so many reasons… the buzzing, insistent synths that drive the song along, the understated guitar happy to stay in the background of a mammoth of a song, the “Hey hey hey hey hey!” bit that sounds EXACTLY like Vampire Weekend’s “A-Punk”. Before I heard this song, I heard someone call it “2009′s Electric Feel”. I laughed to myself. But really, this is so much fucking better than “Electric Feel”! And if they can give stuff of this quality away for free, just how bloody amazing is the actual album going to be??!!

This is without a doubt my favourite song of 2009 so far. It feels, for me at least, like when I first heart Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” and sat in all evening with it on repeat. Seriously. This has the real potential to be big; it’s already been making big waves with blogs of all shapes and sizes, when are the radio stations going to catch on?? “Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix” has just become my most anticipated album of 2009, can’t it just leak already??

Finally leaked TODAY and it is ridiculously fucking good. The rip is only 160kbps but still sounds great. Listing claimed a missing track, but it was all there… the track names were just mixed up, and 'Love Like A Sunset, Parts 1 & 2' were a single track instead of being divided (part 1 is actually a different mix of 'Twenty-One One Zero'). I managed to suss out the correct titles from the lyrics & fixed the errors. E-mail me at yourblindspot@gmail if you want a copy. And you do.

So tempting… All of the leaks have been covered up by their record label so far, but is it worth downloading in 160kbps? I’m sure I can hang on for a bit. I downloaded Veckatimest in 160 and really regret it – it’s noticeably a lot worse. Not that I’m not incredibly jealous of you for being able to listen to this though!

Phoenix remind me a lot lot of Tahiti 80 back in the day… Great sound.
