Calvin Harris x Deadmau5: Demonstrating That The Internet Is Killing Music!

I feel so dirty; just look at my last two posts! This isn’t the sort of image I want to be portraying for the blog… They’ve both been guilty “this is terrible but I sort of love this” posts, and I feel like I should probably get everything back onto the predictably solid electro house remixes and album previews & reviews format that so does not leave me feeling like I just sold my soul to an A&R man in a smart suit with a lot of cash.

The Deadmau5 remix of “I’m Not Alone” is just what’s needed, despite being a near antiquity at two weeks old… Metronomy and Kasabian were both saying that the internet completely devalues music due to the accelerated way that it is consumed and consigned to the recycle bin within a matter of minutes, and without a penny of royalties reaching artists. I have to sort of agree with them in that, at the very least, keeping up with new music has become something that can only be pursued by complete obsessives. Every man and his dog runs his own music blog, and due to hypem.com they’re all raking in thousands of hits a day trying to sell “the next big thing” to you. As a result, music has become saturated with bedroom producers, garage bands and amateur outfits. Some might say that a marked increase in exposure is fantastic for the prospects of new bands – but with the general increase in amounts of music being pumped out via the internet, can this be seen as merely keeping up with the competition, rather than getting a leg up on it? I’m still trying to work out exactly what I think, but I’m sure that it’s somewhat depressing that I should feel out of touch posting a remix that was released a week or two ago, just because I am not at my laptop 24 hours a day and don’t find the time to post things. What’s your take on the internet and music? Can the two really co exist productively in a culture of instant satisfaction? Has illegal downloading really made music worthless? Is it a good thing that music labels are heading towards crisis point, or do we need them to pick out the best new talent? All I know is that when I figure out the future of legal music distribution, I’m going to be a very rich man.
