Love/Hate Chiddy Bang
Chiddy Bang’s version of “Kids”… I’m sure that I should hate this song. In fact, somewhere deep down, possibly just left of my mid-jejunum, I’m pretty sure that I do hate this song. I could spend all day destroying the turgidly college-esq lyrics, but, tellingly, they actually are in their first year of college. So… all is forgiven, sort of. I say sort of, because there can be no repentance for penning lyrics like “And when I park cars/I don’t pay for the meter”. I mean… move over 50 Cent, put your assorted bullet holes away, these guys skip parking charges!
It gets worse… “I remember when I was younger/it was the best”. Sarcastic thoughts may start to formulate in your mind, but you wouldn’t have a chance to finish your mental destruction of Chiddy’s lyrics, because he’s busy digging his next hole, “I used to talk to all the pretty girls in recess”. Aside from being mildly paedophilic, this must go down as one of the most tenuously-rhyming, cringingly-worded couplets in the history of all music ever.
That said… all is forgiven in one line that may just, possibly, hopefully, be indicative of Chiddy Bang’s potential, “Can I please get a little bit of knowledge/Somebody tell Roth that I don’t love college”. Now, I don’t have too much beef with Asher Roth, but this kind of derisory shit slinging is exactly what hip hop mix tapes are all about!
Despite all of the aforementioned reasons why Chiddy Bang should have their recording equipment confiscated by the CIA, you will just not be able to help loving every second of this song, hilariously collegiate lyrics and all. The simple reason for this, as far as I am concerned, is the stuttering production that drives the song along, threatening to burst into MGMT’s “Kids” at any moment, and one of those choruses. The sort of chorus that could slay a festival, erupt in a (bad) club or just lends itself well to being boomed around the four walls of your bedroom. Chiddy Bang, all is forgiven. Just… grow up soon!
