Taking Advantage Of Us!

The past year or so has seen a significant swing in popularity in favour of electronic music. Just think about it – this time last year could you see Deadmau5 in the charts? In fact, pop songs nowadays are just average dance songs with detestable lyrics spread liberally over them. I’ve also noticed that the electronic songs that I post get a lot more attention on hypem.com. Case in point – the Deadmau5 remix of Calvin Harris that I posted a few days ago was at number 3 on hypem.com this morning – but the Jack Penate song that I posted on the same day, which I personally think is a better song, is nowhere near reaching those sorts of positions.

Obviously, there is a complicated plethora of contributory reasons, but most important of all, in my opinion, is the way that electronic musicians and promotors have embraced the internet as a means of distributing music. I would say that 75% of the music I get sent would fall under the electronica/dance label, the remaining 25% of which is made up mostly of electro tinged rock bands. Why is this? Well, musicians who make music on computers are just a lot more technology savvy and are more likely to send out samples of their work to blogs and promotors. You can hardly see Justin Vernon sending out demos for “For Emma, Forever Ago” out to a selection of popular music blogs, can you?

The question this seems to raise is… could this possibly be artificially skewing the popularity of music in electronic music’s favour, pushing other genres underground? What do you think? Whatever the answer is, you have to be grateful when tunes like this from Play Paul & Daniel Dexter pop into your inbox, free of charge. Clearly, they are masters of alliteration, but they aren’t bad at knocking together a ridiculously epic dance tune with a riveting three minute build up, either. Oh, and Play Paul’s full name is Paul de-Homem Christo – ie, he is one half of Daft Punk’s brother.
