The Radio Dept. – Clinging To A Scheme

radiodept

I’d love to tell you that I’ve spent the past week or so starting a potentially world conquering record label / cringingly hip club night / saving the music industry, but the truth is that I have instead been laying words down onto paper for an inanely lengthy history essay which is showing almost no signs of being finished.

For this I have both myself and The Radio Dept. to blame, for whenever I am slightly tempted to work I am more likely to whack on their euphoric new album “Clinging To A Scheme” and sit back in a melodically induced stupor, “staring out” Microsoft Word. However, as carefree, unpretentious and unselfconscious as the record may be, it’s equally depressing that the many fans of Phoenix and the Maccabees who should be enjoying the vaguely similar sounds of The Radio Dept. are likely to let this album pass them by. Please try to not be one of those people. In fact, even if you don’t like Phoenix or the Maccabees (but music? Really?) then you should have a quick glance.

The album comes out April 21st and you’ll be able to stop yourself from doing any directionless work by getting hold of it here. Don’t let this be one of the albums on my end of year list that you realise floated by whilst you were discovering how mindlessly self indulgent MGMT’s new “record” is. You’ll hate yourself for it. I’ll hate you for it too. So will The Radio Dept., and the tardiness of my essay will all have been in vain.

The Radio Dept. – Heaven’s on Fire

PS: Another quality recommendation from much welcomed ear botherees The Blue Walrus.

PPS: In-case you hadn’t already heard, a much welcomed and very well chosen conglomerate of blogs has been launched, dubbed Strangers In Stereo. You probably read some of them anyway, but have a look here.

Been there with the history essay deadline – what’s it on?

Oh and cheers for the link :)

Source driven essay on Hitler’s involvement in the Holocaust, sneaky bit of Kershaw in there and it’s going to be epic hopefully! Fortunately I sort of enjoy history (going to do it at uni) so I can barely complain. You didn’t study history at uni did you?

      • Tim Says:

Yup – guilty – I did history at Edinburgh – really enjoyed it as a degree tbh. Got to cover some pretty varied topics – nuclear secrets, witchcraft, former Yugoslavia – very interesting!

Sounds interesting, I would have applied to Edinburgh but was worried about anti – English bias that keeps on being reported… If you don’t mind me asking, any idea what you’re going to do/ have done with the degree? I’m just stuck wondering at the moment what’s going to be the end result and if it’s a good idea to do a conversion to law.

Anyway. Sorry for invading Radio Dept. with History & careers :)

          • Tim Says:

The anti-English bias is completely fabricated to be honest, but fair enough.

Umm… as for the conversion to law – that is what I’m currently doing. From friends who have done law at uni to those with me doing the GDL and LPC/BVC I would say do a degree you enjoy at uni and do the conversion. It will take a year longer (so funding may be an issue esp. as you don’t get a student loan for the conversion), but the actual law degree is pretty dry. Each to their own though.

Probably enough of that on here, but feel free to email me if you want.
