{Essential New Album} Deerhunter // Halycon Digest

Yes, this is the album the cover, and we're scared too.         Yes, this is the album cover and we’re quite scared as well.

We really, really should have said something about Deerhunter’s “Halycon Digest” by now. Fortunately, the rest of the internet has already proclaimed its love for what must be one of the most finely conceived and brilliantly executed records of many, many years. Or maybe just since Deerhunter’s last, which won’t have been long ago given their prolific output. The oft uttered (in very specific circles) “oh, if you collected all of Brandon Cox’s songs he’d be right up with the Beatles in terms of pop classics” is sort of untrue, but there’s a clutch in this album that are right up there. That, though, is barely even the point – “Halycon Digest” is brilliant as a complete piece, an entire album that has a clear aesthetic, which really is still important in making a great album. In that respect, and so many, many more, Deerhunter have certainly succeeded, making “Halycon Digest” absolutely unmissable.

PS: the {Essential New Album} category is slightly new and is designed as an opportunity for me to be quiet, and in a very short space enthuse about the best new records and try to persuade you to listen to them. There’s little point in me writing a full review – there’s so many professional web sites if that’s what you’re after, but I’d still like to introduce as many people as possible to exceptional new albums.
