The Most Successful Day In NME History!

Yesterday was officially the most successful day in NME’s short history! Nearly 150 different people logged on during the day to check out what’s been hitting my stereo recently, and this is mostly because NME was added to http://www.elbo.ws ; one of the largest blog aggregators. Cheers guys! Of course, I’m not some sort of commercial machine, but it’s nice to see people taking it all in!

As some sort of thanks, I have some insane party tunes for you today. Drop these at a party anywhere that is full of half-decent, half-drunk people and I can guarantee some questionable moves (in a good way). Personally I can vouch that these songs would have me making an embarrassment out of myself all night long.

My dancing, fortunately, is not as embarrassing as Deadmau5′s stage attire. A giant mouse head? Sorry… a giant red mouse head? He must be crazy… he makes Daft Punk & co swimming around in giant fish bowls look like a little touch of make-up. He must be a crazy guy. Luckily, he’s crazily talented too which completely justifies the media explosion (speaking in relative terms) that’s followed him recently. Here are two of my favorite remixes of his, I really can’t recommend them enough, just get them on!

Download: Daft Punk – Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger (Deadmau5 Edit)

Download: Calvin Harris – Merrymaking At My Place (Deadmau5 Remix)

Generally, I don’t get too excited about hypem.com #1s… They are, for the most part, bad songs with big names attached (eg The Killers – Human). However… there are some exceptions to that rule – the most relevant of all being today’s #1, a mash up of Kanye West’s “Touch The Sky” and MGMT’s “Electric Feel” (there you go Hugh). The mash up is by two guys called “Mighty Mi” and “Steve 1 Der” who I have never heard of before, but they sound like great guys, don’t they?
Anyhow, it’s irrelevant who “dud” this, because anyone who successfully blends a hip hop classic & one of 2008′s most prevalent singles deserves that #1 hypem.com track. And it’s awesome. Did I not say that already?

Download: Kanye West vs MGMT – Electric Touch (Mighty Mi/Steve1der Mix)

Lastly, just like they did for previous single “Nude”, Radiohead are running a remix competition for their forthcoming single “Reckoner”. Being my favorite song from “In Rainbows” (hands down!), I am pretty excited about the work that comes out of this! Check out people’s work at this address . Personally, I was mightily disappointed by Diplo’s take on it; he completely ignored the guitars which was what made the song so great! The “Ring Trick Mix” is very good, though.
As I have already pointed out in my second ever post on this blog though, the Amplive version of “Reckoners” is “unfuckwithable” (as they might say). As far as I’m concerned, although they’re not actually in the competition, they’ve already won it.

2008′s Remixes

If we are talking about remixes in 2008; we are talking about Danger. Whilst the rest of the Ed Banger and Ekleroshock roster are spending their time partying, Danger keeps putting out great records and remixes. The result; he pretty much dominates my best remixes of 2008 list.

1. SebastiĆ©n Tellier – Divine (Danger Remix)
Most remixes turn a good song into a better song (at least that is the idea), but here Danger turns an awful French song into a classic. Still can’t understand the “Hot Chip” fixation with prefixing a great song with an awful intro, but that’s the French for you.

2. Black Kids – I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You (Twelves Remix)
The first time I heard this song, I thought it was the album version of “INGTYBHTDWY”. It wasn’t, but it should have been.

3. Estelle – American Boy (Danger Remix)
Still can’t get this song in good quality, but it’s clearly amazing. The build up melts brilliantly into the synth-heavy chorus.

4. Radiohead – Reckonerz (Amplive Remix)
Ok, so not really 2008, but Radiohead released “In Rainbows” on 1st January so we can sort of count this! Radiohead with rap? They could get here just for imagination, but it really works.

5. Bloc Party – Mercury (Telemitry Remix)
Telemitry turns the average (at best) “Mercury” into a proper dance song, showing Bloc Party how to do it, and telling them to stick to their guitars next time.

6. MGMT vs Daft Punk – One More Time To Pretend (Immuzikation Remix)
MGMT + Daft Punk. I really don’t need to say anything else.

7. MGMT – Electric Feel (Justice Remix)
Completely signature Justice bass over one of the singles of the year.
