OK So I have already posted this twice and if it disappears again I’m going to… well, be really upset.
Recently I have found myself in a bit of a musical rut… It’s been so frustrating; for the majority of the year I am absolutely bombarded with great music and struggle to post everything, but recently there has been somewhat of a downturn and, to be honest, I’ve felt really lost without much stuff to get excited about… It’s probably something to do with the economy, that’s what I heard anyway… everything’s to do with the economy. When you get used to being spoilt with so many tunes for most of the time, it makes it harder to deal with a temporary slow down in that flow.
Trust Ed Banger Records to end the drought and get me excited about my music again. Started by Pedro Winter (Busy P), Daft Punk’s manager, back in 2002, its roster has gone from strength to strength and emerged as a forerunner of electronic music when everything started getting a little mainstream last year. In electro music, Ed Banger is synonymous for impeccable taste and I have not yet found an artist on their roster that is anything short of the best in their class.
One of the many things that makes Ed Banger different is that they are a family of sorts. They tour together and play sets together more than any other label I know. Not only that, but their music compliments each other’s perfectly. They also started a relationship: Feadz & Uffie are now going out thanks to Ed Banger.
So… what’s got me all excited? Well… Chibuku Shake Shake (that takes its name from a Botswanan drink) is right up there in contention for the title of Liverpool’s best clubnight with Evol. On November 22nd this line up is coming to Liverpool’s Barfly:
Very special guests secret show confirmed, announced on the night. + Annie Mac Presents: The Whip Live, Annie Mac, Busy P and DJ Medhi Fake Blood + Viper Recordings + Chase & Status Album Launch: + Chase + Status + MC Rage, J Majik, Shock One, Matrix & Futurebound, MC SAS
What’s to get excited about? Well… Radio 1 DJ Annie Mac plays great DJ sets and has chosen Fake Blood to play who is one of the hottest emerging remix artists around. But the real story is that Busy P and DJ Mehdi are playing… And Ed Banger play in packs… so these Special Guests…. Justice?? It makes sense… they are free, having just finished their global tour, it’s not one of Annie Mac’s choices because she has all of hers already, Justice have played Chibuku before, Mehdi & Busy P are playing with Justice for the 1-2 months preceding this show and they are the only act on Ed Banger’s size big enough to headline this show apart from SebastiAn, but it says “special guests” ie, not one ugly French man, but two! (notmanyexperts will not be held responsible if you buy tickets and the secret guest isn’t Justice… but it’s worth a shot and even if Justice don’t turn up, you get DJ Mehdi, Busy P, Annie Mac and Fake Blood!! As Pedro Winter himself would say: “Youpi!”)
As someone wise once said: “BONE ON!!”
Here’s a little DJ Mehdi to get you excited in the absence of Justice. (Both songs highly recommended)
(Check out DJ Mehdi- I Am Somebody on www.hypem.com , it’s really good but I can’t post it here because of complicated copyright reasons)

Like I predicted, the reaction to Kanye’s new song “Love Lockdown” is pretty mixed, even though it’s his best single yet. One thing the song does lack is that killer instrumentation. That’s something that Radiohead’s “Reckoner” provides in DJ Earworm’s mash up. Being pretty up front about it, I think that this is the best mash up I have ever heard. No… it’s not going to get the dancefloor going, but it’s an absolutely immaculate blend of two subtly brilliant songs that come together to surpass either effort easily. DJ Earworm absolutely writes the book on mash ups. No… really, he wrote a book about it. He wrote this book!
Also highly recommended, check it out!

Don’t these guys look far too much like shepherds to be world famous DJs? Honestly I don’t think they would look too much out of place tending to their flock instead of ripping up the decks. Maybe they make some extra money around Christmas by appearing in nativity plays, who knows… Not only that, but the guy on the left appears to be receiving oral sex whilst DJing. Very rock and roll! He sort of deserves the sexual favours though, because these two skinny Belgians are, in fact, the Dewaele brothers; founding members of electro-rock group Soulwax.
OK, time to set things straight. The whole Soulwax set up is really confusing. I hardly understood it myself until recently, but here’s how things are: Soulwax are an electro/rock band consisting of five members including the Dewaele brothers. The Dewaele brothers remix songs as Soulwax and also play legendary live DJ sets as “2ManyDJS“, spinning Soulwax remixes and other “Ed Bangerish” tracks. They also release mixtapes as “Radio Soulwax“. Pretty ambitious guys aren’t they?
Anyway, now that we’ve sorted that out, just why am I banging on about some undernourished electro-geeks from the Euros again? Well… an e-mail dropped into my inbox today from Liverpool Academy advertising The Evol 5th Birthday Gig … featuring 2ManyDJs and Late of the Pier! Let’s get this sorted out now; this is going to be amazing!!! 2ManyDJs‘ sets are absolutely untouchable and their skills behind the decks second to none. Cannot wait until 28th November!! Here’s a sample track list of theirs that they did for the BBC at Creamfields this year:
- The Chemical Brothers – Hey Boy Hey Girl (Soulwax Remix)
- The Gossip – Standing in the Way of Control (Soulwax Nite Version)
- David Guetta – Jack is Back
- Fake Blood – Mars
- Outlander – The Vamp
- ZZT – The Worm
- Tiga – Mind Dimension
- Luke Francis – The Bomb
- Don Rimini – Let Me Back Up (Crookers Remix)
- Alex Gopher – Aurora
- Walter Murphy & The Big Apple Band – A Fifth of Beethoven (Soulwax Edit)
- In Flagranti – Business Accumen
- Hot Chip – Ready for the Floor (Soulwax Remix)
- Mr Oizo – Flat Beat
- SebastiAn – Momy
- Zombie Nation – Kernkraft 400
- MGMT – Kids (Soulwax Remix)
- Proxy – Raven
- Justice – Phantom Pt. II (Soulwax Remix Re-edit)
- Daft Punk – Aerodynamite
- ID
…… If that doesn’t mean anything to you then you really need to get yourself down there on the 28th for “probably” the biggest party the Academy has seen since Justice in February. If that does mean something to you, then you’ve probably already booked your tickets, bought your rave paint and stuck Soulwax’s remix of “Get Innocuous” on iTunes.
There are some more Soulwax tracks & remixes a few posts down, but here are a couple I left out:
Download: LCD Soundsystem – Get Innocuous (Soulwax Remix)
Download: Justice – Phantom pt II (Soulwax Remix)
Download: The Chemical Brothers – Hey Boy, Hey Girl (Soulwax Remix)
And supporting the Dewaele brothers will be the only purveyors of delirious synth-rock that you can take seriously; Late of the Pier.
Download: Late of the Pier – Heartbeat
Coincidentally, I had been meaning to post about a band that I had seen at the Academy supporting Foals on Friday, it’s all fitting together rather nicely isn’t it? Anyway… of course Foals were really great, I didn’t really need to tell you that, but I thought that their support band, Wild Beasts, did a really great job supporting one of the tightest live bands around. They are a bit kitsch, a bit camp, a bit Script, a bit Coldplay and a little bit Mika. Doesn’t sound like a very promising combination does it really? It sounded a lot better in my head…. anyway… red bull is horrible and Jagermeister is also “trés dégoutant”, but put them together and you have a killer drink! It’s sort of like that…
Anyway, they released a really great album “Limbo, Panto” this Summer on Domino Records, home of Franz Ferdinand, Arctic Monkeys, Lightspeed Champion & Cass McCombs. They’re currently on tour, so catch them in a small venue whilst you can.
